Sign in with ChatGPT not working? Check caps and permissions

A successful login doesn't mean an app can use your ChatGPT plan. Check eligibility, consent, caps and excluded features before trying another sign-in.

An app can log you in with ChatGPT and still refuse to use your plan. If you're searching for "Sign in with ChatGPT not working," that's the first distinction to check.

The app may have no plan-use permission, no eligible plan or no remaining allowance for AI requests. OpenAI's sign-in quickstart separates identity from plan usage. Start there when troubleshooting after the DevDay announcement on September 29, 2026; repeating the login won't fix all these cases.

Find the last step that worked: opening your account, showing a plan connection or starting an answer that later stopped. Keep the exact error text. Calling all three situations a login issue hides the clue you need.

Check which account the browser picked

OpenAI lists Plus and Pro as eligible to share included usage with participating apps. A Free account may be able to sign in without getting plan-use permission. Buying credits doesn't automatically make an ineligible account eligible.

Have a personal ChatGPT subscription and a separate work account? Check which account the browser selected and which workspace the flow shows. The account you use in ChatGPT may have different entitlements from the one selected by the app.

The app may also restrict plan usage to certain subscriptions of its own. Read its requirements before changing your OpenAI subscription.

Dactyl's FAQ is a launch-day example: ChatGPT Pro can fund its AI today, while Plus and Business can sign in but cannot share the plan there. That's narrower than OpenAI's general Plus and Pro guidance, and we couldn't confirm why. Check Dactyl's connection flow before treating it as an account bug.

General eligibility doesn't mean every listed partner accepts every paid account immediately. The app's own requirements can be the deciding factor.

Canva's login doesn't pay for its AI

Airtable, Canva, GitLab, HubSpot and Supabase appear in OpenAI's sign-in-only group. You can use ChatGPT as your identity provider there, but that doesn't currently give their AI features access to your plan allowance.

If one of those apps signs you in and then asks for its own AI payment option, its published category explains why. Clearing cookies, reinstalling or approving identity sign-in again won't turn it into a plan-sharing integration.

In an app that does support plan usage, check whether you declined that permission. OpenAI lets identity sign-in remain valid after you decline plan usage, and a repeat login may preserve that choice. Look in the app's settings for a way to enable it deliberately.

If you're debugging the app's integration, a valid identity token isn't enough. The registration guide requires chatgpt.tokens.use.direct among the granted scopes before inference proceeds.

Check the app cap before blaming your plan

Open ChatGPT's Settings > Usage and compare the app cap with your remaining overall allowance. The app's weekly limit is a percentage ceiling on shared usage. It doesn't add or reserve any capacity.

ChatGPT can still work while a connected agent says you've hit a limit. The agent may have reached the smaller cap you set for it. Wait for the applicable reset or choose to change that cap.

Raising the cap lets the app consume more of your shared allowance; it doesn't create extra usage. If your overall included usage is exhausted, changing a smaller cap won't refill the plan. Check the reset information in settings.

OpenAI says usage depends on the app and task, so counting prompts won't tell you reliably how much should remain. Check the usage view instead of assuming each request costs the same amount of allowance.

Credits need a separate opt-in, a balance and an app cap of 100%. Automatic credit purchases have their own setting, which you should review before allowing continued paid usage. You don't need to enable either control just to troubleshoot an app that reached a smaller cap.

Reconnecting won't make an excluded feature work

The current preview doesn't support every capability you can use elsewhere in OpenAI products. Its excluded tools include:

Image generation.
File search.
Code Interpreter.
Native computer use.
Hosted connectors and hosted MCP tools.

Check the request against OpenAI's preview limitations. Reconnecting the same account won't make an excluded tool work. The provider must use a supported route or explain a separate option.

Image input differs from image generation: the preview can accept images when the selected model supports them. Local shell or MCP execution through a coding tool also differs from OpenAI hosting those tools inside the request. An agent can have local tools without getting every hosted Responses tool through this permission.

Don't switch off all tools because "tools aren't supported." Ask the app to identify the unsupported capability. That detail is more useful than another round of unrelated settings changes.

Read the error code before reconnecting

If the app shows a technical code, use OpenAI's errors and recovery guide to narrow your next step:

Reconnect when the authorization has expired, been revoked or can't be renewed. Capacity and usage-service errors need their own checks. A temporary failure doesn't automatically call for fresh authorization.

The launch-day reports don't establish a widespread bug

Our Reddit, X and Hacker News searches didn't confirm a reproducible September 29 failure of the new plan-sharing flow. Older Codex login problems and general ChatGPT login threads don't establish that this launch is broken.

Conductor's September 29 changelog introduced the connection under Settings > Agents > Codex. The same release notes report fixes for Codex tasks stopping on temporary rate-limit and model-capacity errors. Those are Conductor's stated fixes, not evidence of an OpenAI-wide incident or a diagnosis of your account.

On Kilo's launch post, Ari Messer commented that it works with any Pro or Plus plan. That's one positive user report, not a test of every account and surface. Kilo's announcement describes using the plan across its coding surfaces.

If you need Claude or image generation

If you want image generation or models such as Claude and Gemini, AI Pass covers text, images, speech and video across providers through a wallet you fund. You pay for usage without a subscription; its integration documentation explains the approach.

Your app must support the connection. It's a separate billing choice, not a repair for ChatGPT OAuth. AI Pass is independent of OpenAI.

FAQ

Why can I log in but not use my ChatGPT plan?

The app may support identity only, you may have declined plan usage, your account may be ineligible, or an applicable cap may have been reached.

Does signing in again reset ChatGPT OAuth usage?

No. Check the reset information in Settings > Usage. Reauthorization doesn't replenish included usage.

Is Sign in with ChatGPT the same as Codex login?

The phrase also appears in Codex's own authentication. For another app, check its supported integration, permissions and billing route rather than assuming identical behavior.

Can I fix unsupported image generation by upgrading?

The published preview excludes image generation on this route. A larger allowance doesn't remove that capability limit.
